Choosing Retaining Wall Blocks in Natural Stone

Start with how tall the wall needs to be, because that decides nearly everything else. Up to about three feet, wall stone can be dry-laid on a compacted gravel base with no mortar, and that covers most garden walls, terraces and seating walls. Above three feet the wall is holding back soil under load, so it needs heavier blocks at the base, a drainage layer behind the face, and a base built to carry the weight. Most areas require an engineer to sign off on anything over four feet, so check your local code before ordering.

Then choose the stone. Natural stone blocks do not interlock the way concrete units do. They hold through their own weight, a slight lean back into the slope, and courses that overlap the joints below. Sawn wall stone stacks quickly in level courses. Full-color limestone varies more piece to piece and reads as a hand-built wall. For anything tall, or anywhere the wall meets water or steep grade, armour stone carries the load in single large pieces. In a freeze-thaw climate, denser stone such as granite moves less through the seasons and keeps its face longer.

Retaining Walls, Garden Walls and Landscape Blocks

A retaining wall does two jobs at once. It holds back soil, and it creates flat ground you can actually use. On a sloped lot, terracing turns unusable grade into planting beds or a level seating area. Around a patio or pool deck, a low wall retains the fill that levels the surface. Built at seat height, that same wall becomes seating around a fire pit without taking up extra footprint.

The same blocks work at a smaller scale as garden wall and landscape blocks: edging a driveway, framing a raised bed, or marking the line between lawn and planting. Because no two stones are identical, the finished wall reads as part of the landscape rather than a product set into it. If you are facing an existing wall rather than building one, you want stone veneer instead.

Sawn Wall Stone, Full-Color Limestone and Armour Stone

Sawn and snapped wall stone is cut to a set bed height with a snapped face that keeps the natural texture. It stacks in level courses with tight joints and suits formal garden walls and seating walls. Some lines come in fixed sizes, including 4 x 24 inch and 8 x 24 inch units.

Full-color limestone wall stone carries more variation in face, thickness and tone, so each course looks laid by hand rather than stacked from a mold. Quarried in Indiana and Wisconsin.

Armour stone and outcroppings are single large pieces from Ontario and Michigan for walls that need mass: tall retaining walls, boulder walls on a steep grade, pond and shoreline edges. One piece per course, set by machine.

Colors across the range run from grays such as Canyon Gray and Heather Gray, through Buff and Cream, to Blue Granite and Chestnut Granite. Stone shifts tone when it is wet and again in direct sun, so see a piece against your own house before you commit to a full order.
