There is so much cobblestone in Europe because, historically, cobblestones were a durable and readily available material for paving roads and city streets. They withstood heavy use and harsh weather, making them ideal before modern asphalt and concrete were developed. Many old European cities have preserved these cobblestone streets for their historical charm and cultural significance.
